For the "Billy" writing project, I primarily focused on content and not organization.  As you will note, technical writing is a bit different from what you might do in an English class.  We will be working on it as the term progresses.  Here are some hints and notes to improve your technical writing skills.  I will be expecting more of these as we go along in the term.

Notes on the writing project to help "Billy" understand graphing:

  • Follow the instructions regarding length and layout.  "Maximum of 2 pages" and "Double-Spaced" if typed.
  • Include only the topics specified.  Use additional space to tell more about the topic, not about other topics.
  • Use technical terms, terminology or keywords that are important to the subject.
  • Spelling!!!!!  "reciprocal"
  • Define new terms when you first use them, not three paragraphs later.  (Amplitude, period, etc)
  • When using specific variables, highlight them by bolding or using quotes around them. This is especially true of "a" as it may be a part of the sentence or the specific variable.  It makes it easier for the reader to understand your writing.
  • Organization --  Use a logical flow.  Don't use terms without defining them or expect them to know something that you define later in the paper. For example, graph the function before you discuss domain and range.  When graphing the function, tell where the data comes from.  Where do you get the points (0,0), (π/2, 1), etc?
  • Meet the time deadlines.  If your printer is broken, send it by e-mail, bring it on a jump drive, or use the jwelker handin folder on docushare if you are a docushare user.
